Isolation of Plant Procedure

1. Purpose
The purpose of this procedure is to ensure the safety of all personnel involved in the maintenance of the Metal Cutting Band Saw. This procedure outlines steps to isolate electrical and mechanical energy to prevent accidental start up.
2. Scope
This applies to all maintenance staff at the Preston workshop. It applies specifically to the Hafco Metal Master BS-712 Band Saw.
3. Responsibilities
- Workshop Manager: To provide padlocks and Danger Tags.
- Leading Hand: To oversee the isolation process.
- Maintenance Fitters: To follow the process strictly.
4. Personal Protective Equipment
- Safety glasses
- Steel capped boots
- Leather gloves
5. Hazard Identification
Hazards include 240V electricity and the rotating saw blade which may coast to a stop.
6. The Lockout Tagout Process
Step 1: Notify
Tell the leading hand the saw needs a blade change.
Step 2: Normal Stop
Press the Green Stop button on the control panel. Wait for the blade to stop completely.
Step 3: Isolate
Walk to the rear of the machine. Turn the red isolator switch to the OFF position.
Step 4: Lockout
Apply a personal yellow safety padlock through the hole in the isolator switch.
Step 5: Tagout
Attach a 'Danger Do Not Operate' tag to the padlock handle. Write name and date on the tag.
Step 6: Verify
Attempt to press the Green Start button at the front. The machine must not start.
Step 7: Perform Work
Change the saw blade.
7. Restoring Plant to Service
- Remove the old blade and box it.
- Ensure all spanners are removed from the machine.
- Close the wheel covers.
- Remove the padlock and tag.
- Turn the isolator to ON.
- Press Start and test the blade tracking.

Notes on the Example:
- This example is specific to one machine (the Band Saw). A real workshop would have a general procedure but might attach specific sheets for each major machine.
- The 'Verify' step is . It proves the isolation worked.
- PPE is minimal for this task but would increase if welding were involved.
