2. Control Measures

Hazard 1: High pressure water injection

• Elimination: Not possible, task requires water blaster.
• Engineering: Use of lance with trigger safety lock. Use of rated hose connections.
• Administrative: Only trained operator to use gun. Do not point gun at people. Clear area of other staff.
• PPE: Steel capped gumboots, waterproof apron, face shield, impact resistant gloves.

Hazard 2: Slips, trips, and falls

• Engineering: Use of non slip footwear. Containment booms to manage water flow.
• Administrative: Work in small sections. Walk carefully. Use wet floor signs.
• PPE: Steel capped gumboots.

Hazard 3: Use of cleaning chemicals

• Substitution: Using a biodegradable degreaser with lower caustic content.
• Administrative: Consult Safety Data Sheet before use. Wash hands after handling.
• PPE: Chemical resistant gloves (Nitrile), safety goggles.

3. Step by Step Method / Sequence of Work

Step 1: Preparation

• Action: Place wet floor signs at entrance to Loading Bay B. Set up containment booms to direct water to drains. Mix degreaser solution in buckets.
• Risk: Chemical splash, tripping on hoses.
• Controls: Wear gloves and goggles. Lay hoses flat against walls.

Step 2: Chemical Application

• Action: Apply degreaser to floor surface using low pressure spray. Allow to dwell for 10 minutes.
• Risk: Slipping on wet surface.
• Controls: Walk carefully away from sprayed areas.

Step 3: High Pressure Blasting

• Action: Connect water blaster. Turn on pump. Use wide fan nozzle to clean floor from furthest point to exit point.
• Risk: High pressure injection, noise, flying debris.
• Controls: Use face shield and hearing protection. Ensure trigger lock is on when not spraying. Maintain firm grip.

Step 4: Rinse and Vacuum

• Action: Rinse floor with clean water. Use wet vacuum cleaner to remove sludge and water.
• Risk: Manual handling injury, electric shock.
• Controls: Use safe lifting techniques. Use RCD protected power leads.

Step 5: Cleanup and Demobilisation

• Action: Remove booms. Clean equipment. Leave area to dry. Remove signs only when dry.
• Risk: Residue left behind.
• Controls: Visual inspection of floor.
