HIERARCHY OF CONTROLS

This SWMS applies the following controls:

  1. Elimination: Can the work be done on the ground? No.
  2. Substitution: Use lighter units? No.
  3. Engineering: Use mechanical lifting aids, scissor lifts, or scaffold.
  4. Administrative: SWMS induction, permits, warning signs.
  5. PPE: Safety helmet, glasses, gloves, boots, hearing protection.

PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT (PPE)

All workers engaged in this task must wear:

  • High Visibility shirt/vest
  • Long trousers (no shorts)
  • Steel capped safety boots
  • Safety glasses / goggles
  • Cut resistant gloves (for sheet metal work)
  • Safety Helmet (when working outdoors or where falling objects exist)
  • Hearing Protection (when drilling)
  • Sunscreen (if outdoors)

SAFE WORK METHOD / STEPS

Step 1: Pre-Start and Site Set Up

  • Review SWMS with all workers.
  • Inspect site for hazards (powerlines, asbestos, fragile surfaces).
  • Erect signs and barriers.
  • Set up equipment safely.

Step 2: Mounting Indoor Unit

  • Mark wall stud locations using stud finder.
  • Drill mounting holes.
  • Install mounting bracket securely to wall studs.
  • Lift unit onto bracket with assistance if required.

Step 3: Drilling Interconnecting Pipe Hole

  • Check for concealed services on the other side of the wall.
  • Use appropriate PPE (dust mask, glasses).
  • Drill hole at downward angle for drainage.

Step 4: Mounting Outdoor Unit

  • Ensure location allows for adequate airflow and service access.
  • If mounting on brackets, ensure brackets are fixed to solid structure.
  • Use mechanical aid or two people to lift unit.

Step 5: Electrical Connection

  • ISOLATE MAIN POWER.
  • Apply Lock Out Tag Out.
  • Test for dead.
  • Run cabling and connect as per wiring diagram.
  • Licensed Electrician to perform final hard connection.

Step 6: Refrigerant Piping and Testing

  • Flare pipes correctly using flaring tool.
  • Connect pipes to indoor and outdoor units.
  • Pressure test lines with nitrogen.
  • Vacuum lines to remove moisture.
  • Charge with refrigerant.

Step 7: Commissioning and Clean Up

  • Switch on power.
  • Test operation (Cooling/Heating).
  • Check for leaks and temperature differential.
  • Remove all packaging and debris.
